Who:
The Area Agency on Aging is an
organization established by the Older Americans Act of 1965 to
advocate for older adults within its region through planning,
training, technical assistance, and resource development. The
Area Agency on Aging functions primarily as a support to
existing services. The Area Agency on Aging is part of the
Mid-East Commission, a lead regional organization.

We serve a geographic
region that includes the following five counties:
Beaufort
Bertie
Hertford
Martin
Pitt |
When: We are available during
regular business hours, Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Why: Area Agencies on Aging,
established by federal law, are located within the regional
councils of NC. Our mission is to facilitate the coordination of
existing aging services and resources. Through planning,
technical assistance, and resource development, we help to
expand service delivery and promote issues affecting older
adults and their caregivers.
What: As one of 17
Area Agencies on Aging in North Carolina, our goals are
to:
- Administer the Home & Community Care Block
Grant Services; Regional Long Term Care Ombudsman Program;
Family Caregiver Support Program and other grant-funded
services
- Develop a comprehensive and coordinated system of service
delivery within our region
- Develop and administer an area-aging plan, based on input
from county aging committees
- Help local communities respond to issues of aging through
training, planning, assessment, and technical assistance
- Generate public and private resources, including grants
and donations to maintain or increase services for older
adults
- Advocate for residents of long-term care facilities and
older adults living in the community
- Convene regional and local planning committees to study
current aging issues such as: elder abuse, adult day care,
managed care, and long-term care
- Provide technical assistance to regional members of the NC
Senior Tar Heel Legislature
- Promote professional development for aging service
providers
- Provide support to local Nursing Home and Adult Care Home
Community Advisory Committees
- Resolve grievances in nursing homes and rest homes
- Provide information and referral to older consumers,
caregivers, and family members
- Distribute information about current legislation affecting
older adults
- Facilitate and participate in the creation
of housing choices through program formation, advocacy, and
proposal development
- Provide on-the-job-training to low income
older workers through the Senior Community Service Employment
program
- Provide support to senior games and other
wellness programs
